My first Servers#

As I gained more Linux experience, I started experimenting with server applications. I set off with a hand truck and bought a used computer with a Pentium™ Xeon™ CPU and an incredible 16 MB RAM in the south of Vienna. Then I set up our school’s first web and mail server, which from then on should run on my private servers for years. As an alternative to the Windows NT server, I also began to experiment with Samba and to install a file server in parallel, but in pre-Active Directory times I encountered some obstacles with regard to user administration.

I also upgraded privately: I bought my first laptop, a used COMPAQ™ device with a 486 processor and a docking station that was 4x the size. Later I bought a PC with a Pentium II processor and a 17 inch monitor for around 35,000 shillings, on which I installed Windows NT 4, and later Windows 2000. As a result, a small network began to emerge at home as well.
