Professional background#
Early Years#
My professional life started in June 2001 when I was starting my civilian military substitute service (“Zivildienst”) at the St. Anna Kinderspital (St. Anna Children’s Hospital), an institution that specializes in oncological and hematological Diseases in children and adolescents. I was commisioned as a ward assistant on a pediatric oncological ward until May 2002 .
Formal Medical Education#
In autumn 2002 I started my studies in medicine at the University of Vienna, from 2004 at the subsequently independent Medical University of Vienna.
From 2012 to 2015 I completed my training as a General Practicioner at the University Hospital Krems (UK Krems). This was followed by a residency in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine at the same hospital. During the residency I spent a rotation at the Department for Anesthesiology and General Intensive Care at the Medical University of Vienna General Hospital (AKH Wien), one of Europe’s largest hospitals.
I eventually completed my residency in May 2021 after the peak time of the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 chaos and I am currently working as a specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine and as a prehospital emergency physician at the University Hospital Krems (UK Krems), Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences.
Early Praehospital Emergency Care Experience#
In addition to my studies, I became an volunteer member of the Austrian Samaritain Association Division Floridsdorf-Donaustadt (Arbeiter-Samariterbund Österreichs Gruppe Floridsdorf-Donaustadt, “ASBÖ Floridsdorf Donaustadt”) on 2003-08-29 and completed my basic training as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B, “Rettungssanitäter”) in 2005. Eventually I finished my EMT trainig at the Intermediate level (EMT-I, “Notallsanitäter NKV”). From 2006 onwards I was in procurement as a drug officer. In 2008 I switched to the training center and from then on worked in the field of EMT training. Eventually with the completion of my medical studies I moved up the latter to the position of Assistant to the Division Medical Director.
Teaching Experience#
I gathered my first teaching experience From 2005 onwards as a tutor, after my graduation as an external lecturer, at the Department for Medical Education and Training (DEMAW) up until 2014.
Disgruntled by the use of PowerPoint presentations during my work at the training center at the Austrian Samaritain Association Division Floridsdorf-Donaustadt I started my work on the Arbeits- und Ausbildungsstandards für den Sanitätsdienst (AASS, (“Standards on Training and Care in Prehospital Emergency Medical Services”). Over the years it developed in a comprehensive handbook on paramedic training. Since Autumn 2009 a Foundation, the ARGE AASS1Arbeitsgemeinschaft Arbeits- und Ausbildungsstandards für den Sanitätsdienst: Working Group on Standards on Training and Care in Prehospital Emergency Medical Services, has been taking care of coordinating work and license issues. Currently I am serving as Chief Editor and Chairman of the Board.
In addition, I spent several years in training and further education in the field of Emergency medicine in courses of the Forum Emergency medicine active.
Retrospective: Very Early Years#
Extracurricular Activities#
My second devotion lies in the field of Information Technology.
When I was in school back in the nineties, I was a founding member of the Working Group for Computer Science (“ARGE Informatik am GRG21-F21”), a very progressive one initiative within my former school. Serving in a capacity as Systems and Network Administrator I gained valuable practical experience in the field even before receiving my High School diploma. This resulted in the founding of the Cyberservice Internetdienstleistungsges. m. b. H. , a Internet Service Provider (ISP), in 2001 together with a former schoolmate. I finally left the company in 2015 and it got eventually sold to Spusu, a national telecommunications provider, shortly after.

Movies and Mini-Series#
Jewels#
Riget (movie/mini series by Lars v Trier, aka “The Kingdom”, “Geister”, “Hospital der Geister”. Stephen King adopted the story years later.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: Originally beeing the first part of the Karla Trilogy by John le Carré, it was dramatized as a 1979 British seven-part spy drama by the BBC and in more recent times as a movie directed by Tomas Alfredson. Both works are remarkable on their own and strive due to their complex store and subtile story telling.
The BBC mini series is as slow paced as it ist thrilling to watch a complex and secretive world slowly unfold. The protagonist is played by the one-and-only Alec Guinness — therefore any more words of praise would be redundant. The movie takes another stance on the material. It is far more colorful with a poetic touch, it establishes a very strong visual language aiding to tell an unspoken substory about the uneasy world of spies we are observing on screen. A classic example of “show, don’t tell”. It does this however without sacrifing the main story line. and it is IMHO the prime example on a re-adaptation done right.
The BBC mini series was followed by an adaption of Smiley’s People, the third part of the Karla-Trilogy, which I also adore very much.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (BBC mini series)
